3,682 Pirate Sites Blocked to Protect Creators; More Importantly, Did it Work?
Between 2021 and November 2024, the Malaysian government blocked 3,682 pirate sites to protect creators’ rights. A 2017 Motion Picture Association (MPA) report indicated that blocked sites experienced a 67% to 74% traffic reduction. Additionally, a 2020 study by the Asia Video Industry Association (AVIA) reported a 64% decline in Malaysian consumers accessing pirate streaming sites. These findings suggest that site-blocking measures effectively reduce traffic to unauthorized platforms, thereby supporting content creators.
