65% of Vietnamese users access pirated content, industry at risk

Vietnam is confronting a severe digital piracy crisis: about 65% of young users access pirated content, posing risks to cybersecurity, the creative industry, and legal systems. This figure comes from a survey highlighted by Matthew Cheetham—CEO of the Coalition Against Piracy (CAP) and the Asia Video Industry Association (AVIA)—during the “Strengthening international cooperation in protecting digital content copyrights” conference held in Hanoi  .

Vietnam ranks among the highest in the Asia-Pacific region for digital content piracy. In 2022 alone, it incurred a loss of approximately USD 348 million across just three sectors: television, film, and digital music  . Around 80% of these copyright violations occur on digital platforms, manifested through unauthorized streaming of movies, sports events, and music via pirated websites  .

Beyond economic impact, pirated platforms pose significant cybersecurity threats, as they frequently contain malware, malicious ads, and scam content targeting mainly young users. These exposures increase risks of identity theft, fake websites, and financial fraud  .

To address this crisis, experts recommend a multi-pronged strategy combining site blocking, advanced content protection technologies (like DRM, AI monitoring, and watermarking), and public awareness campaigns  .
