ACMA warns influencers of multi-million-dollar penalties for promoting illegal gambling

Australia’s media regulator ACMA has issued a strong warning to social media influencers about promoting illegal offshore gambling platforms. Under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, only licensed operators can encourage sports wagering and approved lotteries. Influencers caught advertising bribery, linking to offshore casinos or live-streaming play can face civil fines up to AU$59,400, while facilitation—such as sharing access links—can attract penalties as high as AU$2.5 million. ACMA emphasized that such ads expose followers, especially youth, to unregulated scams, and says enforcement is ramping up in response to a rise in influencer-driven illegal betting content.
