Amazon Has "Multimillion-Dollar Problem" After Jason Statham Movie Leak
Amazon Prime Video accidentally made Jason Statham’s new action movie Mutiny available to stream in full before its official theatrical release, creating a potentially serious piracy problem for distributor Lionsgate. The film was scheduled to open exclusively in cinemas on August 21, 2026, but the complete 95 minute movie appeared on Prime Video in the United States on August 19.
The incident appears to have resulted from an error involving the movie’s Prime Video product page. The page was intended to contain promotional material such as trailers, but the full feature film was uploaded instead. Users discovered that they could watch the entire movie for free, and reports of the unexpected availability quickly began circulating on social media.
The mistake was particularly unusual because Mutiny is not an Amazon production. Lionsgate is distributing the film in the United States, while MadRiver Pictures and Jason Statham’s Punch Palace Productions are among the production companies involved. Promotional material continued to describe the movie as an exclusive theatrical release, making it clear that its appearance on Prime Video was not part of the planned distribution strategy.
Amazon removed the movie after discovering the error, and the Prime Video listing subsequently showed it as unavailable. Reports differ slightly on exactly how long the film remained accessible, ranging from more than an hour to several hours or overnight. An industry source told TheWrap that only a relatively small number of users accessed the movie directly through Prime Video before it was removed.
However, the consequences potentially extended well beyond those initial viewers. Once a pristine digital copy of an unreleased movie becomes publicly accessible, users can capture and redistribute it through piracy networks. Reports subsequently indicated that copies originating from the accidental Prime Video release appeared on piracy sites before the movie had even reached US cinemas.
The incident therefore represents a potentially costly distribution and antipiracy failure. Unlike a conventional cinema recording or low quality leak, an accidentally released streaming version can provide pirates with a high quality digital source immediately. Industry buyers reportedly expressed frustration over the incident, describing the consequences of such an early leak as potentially a multimillion dollar problem.
Mutiny, directed by Jean François Richet, stars Statham as Cole Reed, a former Royal Marine and bodyguard who witnesses his billionaire employer’s murder, is framed for the crime and boards a cargo ship while attempting to uncover those responsible. The film also stars Annabelle Wallis, Roland Møller and Adrian Lester.
The incident highlights how distribution platforms themselves can become the source of major pre release piracy events. Even when an unauthorized release is corrected quickly, a brief period of legitimate access can be sufficient for a full quality copy to escape into piracy networks and remain available long after the original platform has removed it.
