BBC Eye investigates China’s Spycam Porn
The BBC’s investigative unit BBC Eye has revealed a widespread illegal “spy-cam” industry in China that secretly films people inside hotel rooms and private spaces and sells the footage online. Journalists found networks of hidden cameras, often tiny devices concealed in hotel rooms, that record unsuspecting guests and stream or upload the videos to websites and channels where subscribers can view them. Victims sometimes discover the videos themselves when browsing such sites, with devastating effects on their privacy and mental wellbeing. The investigation identified dozens of active cameras linked to a single platform and suggests that thousands of hotel guests may have been filmed without consent. The footage is frequently distributed via encrypted messaging platforms despite pornography being illegal in China, and the BBC documented undercover work uncovering these hidden devices and the organised criminal networks behind the trade.
