Canal+ wants to block VPN usage – and VPN providers are fuming
French streaming giant Canal+ is escalating its anti-piracy efforts by seeking court orders to block Virtual Private Network (VPN) services, including NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and ProtonVPN, from accessing websites that illegally stream football matches. This move has sparked significant backlash from VPN providers, who argue that such actions undermine internet freedom and privacy. ProtonVPN stated that targeting VPNs, which serve as essential tools against online censorship, crosses a critical line. The VPN Trust Initiative (VTI), representing several major VPN services, warns that this approach could have far-reaching consequences, jeopardizing the security and privacy of users in France. They advocate for collaborative solutions that address piracy without compromising digital rights.
