Change in tactics: Danish courts send two digital pirates straight to prison
In late March 2025, Danish courts issued the country’s first unconditional prison sentences for digital piracy without a profit motive. A 46-year-old man received a nine-month sentence plus 120 hours of community service for sharing 74 terabytes of copyrighted movies and TV shows via torrent sites. Separately, a 48-year-old man was sentenced to one year in prison for hosting servers distributing 134 terabytes of copyrighted material within “The Scene,” a clandestine piracy network. These landmark rulings underscore Denmark’s intensified stance against online piracy, emphasizing that even non-commercial file sharing can lead to significant legal consequences.
