Copyright Commission Suspends Multiple ‘.NG’ Domains Over Online Piracy
The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has suspended multiple .ng domains linked to widespread online piracy. According to the NCC, the affected websites were hosting and distributing copyrighted music, films, and other creative works without authorization, causing significant financial losses to Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
The action was carried out in collaboration with the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA), which manages the country’s domain registry. The NCC stated that the suspension aims to disrupt illegal distribution networks and send a strong warning to website operators who profit from piracy.
Officials emphasized that online piracy continues to damage Nigeria’s fast-growing creative sector, particularly Nollywood and the music industry, both of which rely heavily on digital revenue. Pirated content reduces income for creators, discourages investment, and undermines legitimate streaming platforms.
The Commission announced that further investigations and enforcement actions are underway, including potential criminal prosecutions of domain owners and operators. It also urged the public to support legal content sources and warned that more .ng domains will be suspended if found engaging in piracy.
The move marks one of the strongest coordinated anti-piracy efforts targeting Nigerian domains in recent years.
