Czech anti-piracy action shuts down Bitplay sports streaming service

The article reports that Czech authorities and broadcasters successfully shut down the illegal sports streaming service Bitplay as part of a coordinated anti piracy action. The operation followed a criminal complaint filed by the Association of Commercial Televisions (AKTV) and an investigation conducted by the Police of the Czech Republic

Bitplay was identified by broadcasters in mid 2025 after monitoring systems detected that the platform was illegally distributing television content. Despite warnings from copyright holders demanding that the service stop its activities, the operator continued to provide access to premium content without permission.

The service offered paid sports television channels, live sports broadcasts, and some TV series without the necessary licences from rights holders. It operated through several domains and promoted its streams heavily on social media to attract subscribers.

The platform mainly targeted viewers in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland, allowing them to watch sports programming that normally requires paid subscriptions. Investigators collected evidence with the help of monitoring company Warezio, which tracks illegal distribution of television content online.

Using this evidence, law enforcement authorities were able to identify the individual responsible for operating the service. The investigation ultimately led to the shutdown of Bitplay and the termination of its online domains.

AKTV representatives said the action is part of a broader effort to combat digital piracy, which harms broadcasters, sports organizations, and clubs by reducing revenue from licensed broadcasting rights. They emphasized that investment in sports broadcasting and other premium content depends on effective copyright protection.

Authorities also warned that illegal streaming platforms can pose security risks to users, including the possible theft of personal or payment information and exposure to malware or other malicious software.

Overall, the shutdown of Bitplay reflects increasing cooperation between broadcasters, technology monitoring companies, and law enforcement to target illegal sports streaming services across Europe.
