Domain Registry Investigates Spain’s Piracy Overblocking Damage

The Catalan domain registry, PuntCAT, is investigating widespread overblocking of .cat domains in Spain, resulting from court-ordered anti-piracy measures initiated by LaLiga and Telefónica. These measures target shared Cloudflare infrastructure to block illegal football streams but have inadvertently restricted access to legitimate websites unrelated to piracy. PuntCAT reported that over 2,200 .cat domains using Cloudflare were affected, impacting sites with more than 400,000 visitors in February alone. The registry has notified affected users and is monitoring the situation, reserving the right to pursue legal action to protect its users’ access and service quality.
