EUIPO, EC team to combat piracy

The article reports that the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and the European Commission (EC) are strengthening cooperation to combat online piracy and counterfeit goods under the Digital Services Act (DSA).

Under a five year agreement, the EUIPO will provide technical expertise and advisory support to help address intellectual property (IP) violations online, especially piracy and counterfeiting.

A key focus is monitoring how major platforms operate. The EUIPO will assist the Commission in overseeing Very Large Online Platforms and search engines with more than 45 million users, analyzing their internal reports to evaluate how effectively they handle illegal content.

The cooperation also includes training national authorities, supporting enforcement of the DSA, and contributing to the European Board for Digital Services, which coordinates policy and enforcement across EU countries.

Another important element is building shared best practices, tools, and expertise for courts, rights holders, and smaller online platforms to better prevent misuse of services and improve compliance.

The broader goal is to create a safer, more transparent digital environment, where platforms are required to implement systems for reporting and removing illegal content and to manage systemic risks linked to piracy and counterfeit goods.

Overall, the initiative reflects a coordinated EU effort to improve enforcement, increase platform accountability, and strengthen the fight against online piracy at scale.
