How audiovisual piracy impacts entertainment industry
Audiovisual piracy poses a significant threat to the entertainment industry, impacting revenue streams, employment, and the sustainability of content creation. Despite the proliferation of legal streaming services, piracy rates remain alarmingly high. In Latin America, over 40% of internet-connected households, approximately 24 million homes, engage in illegal streaming. Similarly, in Spain, 30% of households access unauthorized services for movies, series, and live sports. Factors contributing to this trend include limited availability of desired content on legal platforms and delays in releasing new titles. Sports content, particularly football, is among the most pirated, with high-profile leagues frequently targeted. Addressing this issue necessitates a collaborative approach involving governments, technology companies, and copyright organizations to enhance content accessibility, enforce legal measures, and educate consumers about the consequences of piracy.
