Authors push back against Meta piracy

Authors worldwide are protesting Meta’s alleged use of pirated books from the shadow library LibGen to train its AI model, LLaMA. Investigations revealed that Meta utilized these unauthorized materials, sparking outrage among writers who claim their intellectual property was exploited without consent or compensation. Abie Longstaff of the UK’s Society of Authors emphasized that AI models can mimic an author’s unique style, effectively appropriating their creative voice. In response, author groups are organizing campaigns to pressure governments into taking action against such practices. Meta maintains that its AI training methods comply with existing intellectual property laws.
