BBC, Premier League & Sky Seek Tougher UK Regs to Deter Google Search Piracy
The BBC, Premier League, and Sky have jointly urged the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to enforce stricter anti-piracy regulations targeting Google’s search services. In their submission, they acknowledge Google’s existing anti-piracy measures but argue that these efforts are insufficient, as copyright-infringing services remain easily accessible through both search results and advertisements. They propose the implementation of a robust “Know Your Customer” (KYC) policy for advertisers, ensuring proper verification and identification to prevent misuse. Additionally, they advocate for a transparent repeat infringer policy to deter persistent offenders. The organizations believe that these measures are essential to protect the UK’s creative industries and maintain fair competition in the digital market.
