MultiChoice, COSOMA Launch Anti-Piracy Crackdown in Malawi
On May 20, 2025, MultiChoice, in collaboration with the Copyright Society of Malawi (COSOMA) and the Malawi Police Service, conducted a four-day anti-piracy training session in Lilongwe. The training, attended by 21 participants including police officers, prosecutors, and Ministry of Justice representatives, focused on various aspects of piracy, enforcement techniques, legal frameworks, and the growing threat of internet streaming piracy.
Following the training, on May 21, 2025, an enforcement operation was carried out in Lilongwe. Acting on intelligence and strategies discussed during the training, the Malawi Police Service, with support from COSOMA, raided an illegal internet streaming operation. Two suspects were arrested, and several hundred pieces of pirate streaming equipment were seized.
The initiative underscores the commitment of MultiChoice and COSOMA to combat piracy and protect the creative economy in Malawi. Streaming piracy not only undermines the creative industry by diverting revenue from content producers and legitimate service providers but also exposes consumers to risks such as malware and compromised personal data. The success of this operation highlights the effectiveness of collaborative efforts in tackling piracy and the importance of continued enforcement to uphold the rule of law.
