Over 3.37 million gamble at online casinos in Japan despite ban
A recent survey by Japan’s National Police Agency (NPA) reveals that approximately 3.37 million individuals in Japan have engaged in online gambling through overseas casinos, despite such activities being illegal in the country. Notably, around 40% of these users were unaware of the illegality of online casinos. The survey, conducted between July and January, encompassed 27,145 participants aged 15 to 79. Findings indicate that 3.5% of respondents had gambled online, with an estimated 1.97 million still participating in these illegal activities. On average, these users wager approximately 52,000 yen (about $350) monthly, culminating in an estimated annual expenditure of 1.24 trillion yen (approximately $8.4 billion) on illegal online gambling nationwide.
