Policeman arrested in MultiChoice Waka TV raid
In a recent crackdown on the Waka TV piracy syndicate, a Western Cape police officer was arrested on charges related to the illegal distribution of content. The arrest followed a collaborative raid by MultiChoice Group’s cybersecurity subsidiary, Irdeto, and the Western Cape commercial crime unit. The officer has been criminally charged and released on bail.
Frikkie Jonker, director of broadcast and cybersecurity at Irdeto, emphasized the significance of this operation in disrupting piracy networks and reaffirmed the commitment to protect intellectual property. He stated, “This is just the beginning. More actions will follow as we intensify our efforts to protect intellectual property.”
Waka TV has been identified as a highly organized piracy syndicate that has siphoned millions from the legitimate broadcasting industry, threatening jobs, businesses, and the creative economy. MultiChoice, Irdeto, and law enforcement agencies are employing advanced forensic investigations, cyber intelligence, and legal action to dismantle these piracy networks, with more arrests and takedowns anticipated.
