Sky claims man may have made €450,000 a year from 'dodgy box' service

The Irish Examiner reports that the number of historical abuse allegations against the Catholic Church in Ireland surged by over 50% in 2024–25. A total of 385 new allegations were received, compared to 252 in the previous year—marking the highest annual figure since records began in 2009  . Most of the claims (291) involve sexual abuse, primarily occurring between 1960 and 1989. Notably, 73% of allegations relate to historical incidents, while less than 0.5% concern post-2000 abuse. Many accused individuals are deceased, with around 64% no longer alive  . The report attributes the rise in disclosures to increased awareness following the release of a Scoping Inquiry into sexual abuse in religious boarding schools. Survivors advocate for better support systems and non‑adversarial redress.
