Sports Betting Scandal Casts Dark Shadow Over Upcoming March Madness
Federal and NCAA authorities are investigating a widespread point-shaving scandal involving professional and college basketball, casting a shadow over the upcoming March Madness tournament. The investigation began when former Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter admitted to manipulating his performance during games in 2024 to affect prop bets. Porter pleaded guilty to federal conspiracy and wire fraud charges and is awaiting sentencing. This led to the arrest of Las Vegas gambler Shane Hennen, alleged orchestrator of the scheme, who faces charges of wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering. The probe has implicated at least seven college programs and nine games where players allegedly gambled on or attempted to alter game outcomes during the 2023-24 season. Schools under scrutiny include Temple, Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan, North Carolina A&T, and Mississippi Valley State. The NCAA emphasizes its commitment to maintaining the integrity of competition amid these concerns.
