Success in MultiChoice piracy case
In April 2025, South African pay-TV operator MultiChoice achieved a significant legal victory against digital piracy. The Germiston Regional Court found Vuyisile Victor Selem guilty of contravening the Cybercrime Act 19 of 2022 and fraud, sentencing him to either a R10,000 fine (€475) or 12 months of direct imprisonment.
Selem was apprehended during a targeted raid in Germiston while assisting an undercover informant with the installation of an illegal IPTV box. Investigations revealed his role as a reseller for the pirate IPTV service Waka TV. Evidence seized included an unauthorized streaming device, promotional materials advertising DStv Premium channels, and a mobile phone containing details of approximately 90 paying customers.
This case underscores the serious consequences of engaging in digital piracy and sets a strong precedent in South Africa’s fight against cybercrime. MultiChoice, in collaboration with the South African Police Service and Irdeto Anti-Piracy investigators, continues to pursue legal actions against individuals affiliated with Waka TV.
