Switzerland and Liechtenstein partner to strengthen cross-border gambling protections
Switzerland and Liechtenstein have implemented a bilateral agreement to enhance protections against gambling addiction. Effective January 7, 2025, individuals banned from casinos in one country will also be prohibited from gambling in the other. This reciprocal arrangement extends Switzerland’s approximately 100,000 existing gambling bans to Liechtenstein’s casinos and vice versa. The Swiss Casino Association supports this initiative, noting that previously, banned individuals could circumvent restrictions by crossing the border. While this agreement strengthens player protection, it does not address the issue of illegal online gambling, with unlicensed foreign operators comprising an estimated 40% of Switzerland’s online gambling market. The Association urges stricter measures against these platforms to further safeguard consumers.
