'This could happen' - expert issues stark warning about what sickos are doing with AI technology

An Irish cyber expert has warned that anyone sharing intimate photos or videos online — even privately — is at serious risk of becoming a victim of sextortion. The warning follows a rise in cases where criminals obtain explicit content through hacking, fake profiles, or manipulation, and then use it to blackmail victims for money or further sexual material.

The expert explains that many people believe their content is safe when sent through encrypted messaging apps or stored on personal devices, but cybercriminals can still access it through data breaches, compromised accounts, or phishing attacks. Once obtained, the material can be quickly spread across social media, adult sites, or shared with friends and family, causing severe emotional and reputational harm.

Victims often feel too ashamed to report incidents, allowing offenders to continue targeting others. The expert urges the public to avoid sending or storing intimate content, strengthen online security practices, and report any threats immediately to authorities.

The warning aims to raise awareness as sextortion and image-based abuse continue to increase in Ireland.
