Thousands of illegal gambling operators are targeting South Africans
A new report reveals that thousands of illegal online gambling operators are actively targeting South Africans, despite strict national regulations. According to the National Gambling Board, unlicensed platforms based overseas are aggressively marketing to local users through social media, influencers, and search ads, making enforcement extremely difficult.
These illegal operators offer sports betting, casino games, and lotteries without paying taxes or following consumer protection rules. As a result, players have no legal recourse when winnings are withheld, accounts are frozen, or personal and financial data is misused. Authorities warn that many of these platforms are linked to criminal networks involved in money laundering and fraud.
The report highlights major financial losses for South Africa, including billions in untaxed revenue and reduced income for licensed operators who follow regulations. It also raises concerns about rising gambling addiction, debt, and social harm, particularly among vulnerable communities.
Regulators say they are expanding monitoring efforts and pursuing cooperation with banks and internet service providers to block illegal transactions and websites. However, they stress that stronger legislation, public awareness, and enforcement capacity are needed to curb the growing problem.
