Why AI-turbocharged misogyny and porn are threats to EU democracy
The opinion article argues that AI powered pornography, deepfake technology, and online misogyny are becoming serious threats not only to women but also to democratic participation across Europe. The author contends that AI has dramatically accelerated the creation and spread of nonconsensual sexual content, harassment campaigns, and misogynistic narratives, disproportionately targeting women in public life, including journalists, activists, politicians, and academics. The article warns that these attacks can intimidate women, silence voices in public debate, and discourage political participation, ultimately weakening democratic institutions. It calls on European policymakers, regulators, technology companies, and civil society to treat industrialized misogyny and AI enabled sexual exploitation as a democratic and human rights issue rather than merely an online safety problem.
