Women suffer most from deepfake abuses, and as cases rise, victims need better ways to regain control

The article reports a growing surge in AI-generated sexual abuse targeting women, particularly through deepfake technology. Increasingly accessible AI tools allow users to create realistic fake videos and images that place women’s faces onto sexual content without their consent. Many victims only discover the material after it spreads widely online, causing severe emotional distress, reputational damage, and fear for personal safety.

Experts say the trend is accelerating due to powerful generative AI platforms, mobile apps, and online communities that openly produce and share deepfake pornography. Most victims are ordinary women, not celebrities, including students, influencers, and professionals whose social media photos are used without permission.

Legal protection remains limited in many countries, with current laws often not covering AI-generated abuse or requiring proof that the content is real. Enforcement is difficult because perpetrators hide behind anonymity and platforms respond slowly to takedown requests.

Advocates and researchers call for stronger legislation, faster content removal systems, better platform accountability, and improved digital literacy. They stress that AI-driven sexual abuse is becoming one of the fastest-growing forms of online gender-based violence, with serious psychological and social consequences for victims.
