DigitalES demands urgent measures and warns: "The current regulation does not stop audiovisual piracy"

DigitalES, the Spanish association for telecoms, technology and digital transformation companies, has joined the “Alliance for Creation,” a CEOE backed initiative calling for stronger action against piracy and better protection of intellectual property in Spain. The group says current rules are not enough to stop modern piracy methods.

DigitalES warns that piracy damages Spain’s digital economy by reducing investment, weakening innovation and harming the audiovisual sector’s sustainability. According to the Creators and Content Industries Coalition, Spain records more than 7.3 billion illegal accesses to cultural and audiovisual content each year, causing over €3 billion in industry damage and €366 million in lost tax revenue.

The article highlights sports piracy as a major concern. Spain is described as the third worst EU country for sports piracy, with 19% of the population using illegal broadcasts, above the EU average of 12%. Among people aged 15 to 24, the rate rises to 42%.

DigitalES proposes five priorities: faster regulation, quicker blocking of illegal live content, shared responsibility and costs beyond telecom operators, involvement of intermediaries such as search engines, social networks, messaging services, payment platforms and hosting providers, and stronger public private cooperation. Its general director, Miguel Sánchez Galindo, says Spain has made progress but still needs a broader, sustained effort.
